In consideration of representations to the effect that it is desirable to repair the fabric of St. John's Cathedral, the question arises as to how the Trustees could justify seeking a grant from public funds towards their object now that it has been decided that a grant for ecclesiastical purposes is not forthcoming.
When the Grant was voted, it was decided that the Cathedral was to be constructed and the extent of two thirds of the cost was to be met from contributions from persons and Government.
But although it seems upon the face of it to comply with the request now made, it is reasonable that the fabric of the Cathedral should be handed over to the Trustees to enter upon the responsibility of maintaining it unassisted.
So he will therefore, if it is considered proper, be willing to approve a contribution from public funds towards the cost of certain repairs.
